Description of the Department

The autonomous CIMND* Department of AStA Bonn represents all students affected by Ableism.

Ableism describes the societal norm of how the human body, perception, thought
and communication should function
and the resulting discrimination when people do not conform to this idea. We have observed that many students do not even know what Ableism is,
even though they are affected by Ableism themselves. A lot of us felt the same way.

CIMND* stands for Chronically Ill, Mad, Neurodivergent, Deaf and Disabled Persons and others affected by ableism.

Our department is still in the founding phase,
but our goal is to actively advocate for the concerns and rights of this status group.
The list above does not have to be an exhaustive list, we are open to dialogue.

We want to provide a platform where those affected by ableism can exchange, network and support each other.
We are also committed to breaking down barriers and promoting inclusion at our university.
To reach that, we will gather information and ideas from which to develop demands and solutions.

We would like to offer advice from a student perspective,
which is why CIMND* Counselling (Formally known as BOCKS counselling) is now part of our department, to which affected persons are welcome to contact.

We look forward to working with all interested parties and cordially invite you to become part of our community.
Together we can make a difference!

What are Attendance Times?

The department offers attendance times several times a week in our room in the AStA container. At these times someone from the department is approachable and you can contact us in person or by phone with any conceivable questions. This is also the time when we usually answer emails and clarify organizational matters on site.

Come to us when...

  • ...you don't know what ableism is and you care about it
  • ...you want to share your experiences of ableist discrimination with us so that we can tackle them
  • ...you want to learn more about the perspectives and experiences of (other) CIMND* students
  • ...you want to get to know the department staff and learn more about our work
  • ...you have an idea of what the department should offer and you want to tell us
  • ...you want to make a purchase proposal for the planned lecture library
  • ...there are other concerns or you are just curious

Able*is*muss-event series 2025: 07.04.-17.04.

The Able*is*muss series of events of the AStA of the University of Bonn goes into the second round!

This year we are also dedicated to educating people about ableism - a form of discrimination that targets people with disabilities, chronic and mental illness, neurodivergent and deaf people. Our aim is not only to draw attention to this discrimination, but also to show concrete ways for antiableist action.

New this year: In addition to Bonn, events are also taking place in Cologne for the first time – in cooperation with the Autonomous Department for Studying Without Barriers.

A total of 14 events (some of them in english) await you from the 7th. to the 17th. April - organised by various AStA departments from Bonn and Studying Without Barriers from Cologne, the association Disability and Mad Pride Bonn as well as several departments from the university administrations.

You will find the full program (and information about the language of the events) soon here: https://asta-bonn.de/de/veranstaltungen/veranstaltungsreihe-able-is-muss-2025

More info to follow :)

Announcement general meeting on Thursday, September 26th, 2024

On July 15, 2024, the general assembly to found the new department for students affected by ableism took place in the AStA at the University of Bonn. Due to a lack of time and capacity, we were unable to discuss the name of the unit in detail.

For the upcoming general meeting on Thursday, September 26th, 2024 at 6 p.m. in Lecture Hall VIII in the main university building, we would like to collect your name suggestions with explanations in advance in order to have more leeway on the date and thus allow more affected students to participate in the naming process make possible.

The name should contain the goal or responsibility of the department and, if possible, include all people/groups represented by the department
• Disabled people
• People with chronic illnesses
• Mentally ill people
• Deaf people
• Other people and groups affected by ableism

Send us a private message via Instagram or an email with the following information:
• name • Justification/explanation of the name suggestion • Contact information (email address or similar) for questions

Alternatively, you can fill out a piece of paper in the office (in the AStA container, Endenicher Allee 19) with your suggestions and reasons.

We look forward to your creative suggestions!
