Consulting

  • Do you have a disability or chronic illness?
  • Are you having difficulties studying because of your disability?
  • Do you have conflicts with lecturers or professors?
  • Do you have missed classes due to therapy appointments?
  • Are you having financial difficulties due to your studies or housing situation?
  • Are you in need of explanations to teachers or fellow students?
  • Have you missed seminars or excursions due to hospital stays?
  • Do you feel misunderstood or uncomfortable in the lecture hall or seminar?
  • Do you have difficulties concentrating or learning because of your physical condition?
  • Do you have problems with the physical or institutional conditions at the university?

Then come to our consultation! Every disability or illness and its perception is individual and we want to support you in your situation in the best possible way!

We can advise you on the following topics, among others

  • Application for severe disability at the pension office, expert opinions and doctors, social welfare and job center applications, certificates and job interviews
  • Compensation for disadvantages (What options are there for compensation for disadvantages in exams, homework, etc. and how does this work?)
  • Refund of costs for the semester ticket (possibility, deadlines)

This is not an improvement in the position of the person concerned, but an equalization that is mandatory for the university according to the Higher Education Act of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Compensation for disadvantages can, for example, extend the processing time for written examinations and assignments, change the type of examination (oral instead of written or similar) or allow the use of aids such as sign language interpreters or laptops. It is also possible to be exempted from coursework if you provide a compensatory service.

Important: Advice for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses (BOCKS) is provided by students and makes no claim to completeness or accuracy. Furthermore, this advice does not replace personal advice from other advice centers!

Staff position

If, in addition to seeking advice, you would like to raise your concerns in terms of university policy or have other suggestions for equal opportunities and accessibility at the University of Bonn, please contact us. Our long-term goal is to make the university a place where everyone is welcome and everyone can study and further their education with equal opportunities.

Students with disabilities or chronic illnesses have enough tasks to take care of and we believe that attending university and studying itself should be equally accessible to everyone and not be another barrier. According to Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to education and university education must be equally open to all according to their abilities.

The subject area of inclusive education is complex, which is why it is not necessarily always possible to identify and anticipate all the problems that arise as an outsider. This is precisely why it is important to listen to students, address their individual concerns and advocate for them.
